Better Pathways

Practical Help. Local People. Fewer Barriers.

Better Pathways is a division of MP Consolidated Inc. created to connect community support directly with people who need it.

Our focus is simple: help individuals of all ages in communities such as Scarborough, Toronto and surrounding areas access practical, respectful outreach from people with backgrounds in community and personal support work.

Better Pathways operates as an independent, private, for-profit community outreach initiative. This structure is intentional. It allows the program to respond to local needs without many of the administrative barriers, institutional requirements and government bureaucracy that can delay ordinary people from receiving practical help.

Neighbours Helping Neighbours

Sometimes a person needs someone to listen.

Sometimes a family needs help finding resources.

Sometimes an individual is struggling with housing, food, isolation, transportation, paperwork, daily living, family difficulties or an unexpected crisis.

And sometimes the biggest barrier is simply knowing where to turn.

Better Pathways works to marshal community support and make qualified outreach workers available to assist people where practical help can make a difference.

Our goal is not to build another complicated institution.

Our goal is to help.

Supporting Qualified Community Workers

Better Pathways acts as a funding mechanism for individuals with Community Service Worker (CSW), Personal Support Worker (PSW) and Developmental Service Worker (DSW) credentials or relevant training who are available to participate in community outreach.

Depending on the circumstances and the worker’s qualifications, support may include:

  • Community and crisis outreach
  • Listening and emotional support
  • Wellness checks and friendly contact
  • Assistance locating community resources
  • Help navigating social and community services
  • Support with everyday organization and problem-solving
  • Assistance for seniors and vulnerable adults
  • Support for people experiencing isolation
  • Practical help for individuals and families facing temporary difficulties
  • Advocacy and accompaniment where appropriate
  • Referrals to specialized services when needs are beyond the worker’s role or qualifications

Better Pathways recognizes that every person’s circumstances are different. Assistance is based on the situation, available resources and the qualifications of the individual outreach professional.

Why Independent?

Many excellent organizations and government programs already serve Toronto and Scarborough.

But formal systems can also involve waiting lists, eligibility rules, assessments, paperwork, referrals, jurisdictional restrictions and other administrative requirements.

Better Pathways was created to provide another option.

By operating independently, we can focus on practical assistance, flexibility and human connection rather than building another layer of bureaucracy.

Independence allows Better Pathways professionals to respond based on individual circumstances while remaining within their training, professional responsibilities and applicable laws.

Reducing the Stigma of Asking for Help

People do not always feel comfortable approaching a government agency, institution or large social-service organization.

They may be worried about being judged.

They may not believe their situation is serious enough.

They may fear becoming involved in a complicated system.

Or they may simply want someone they can talk to privately.

Better Pathways is designed around a respectful, low-barrier approach.

There is no expectation that someone must fit into a particular category before being treated with dignity.

Our philosophy is straightforward:

If someone is struggling, reaching out should not make life more complicated.

Better Pathways professionals approach individuals without judgment and with respect for personal privacy. Any confidentiality is, of course, subject to applicable law, professional responsibilities and situations involving immediate safety concerns.

Community-Funded Outreach

Better Pathways intends to use community fundraising, including GoFundMe, to support outreach work.

Funds raised for Better Pathways outreach are intended to go directly toward compensating the CSW, PSW, DSW or other approved outreach professionals providing the assistance, less applicable GoFundMe or payment-processing charges.

The goal is to keep administration simple and direct as much available funding as possible to the people actually doing the work in the community.

Better Pathways is operated as a private, for-profit initiative and is not representing itself as a registered charity. Contributions should therefore be understood as support for the Better Pathways outreach initiative rather than charitable donations eligible for a charitable tax receipt unless expressly stated otherwise.

A Different Kind of Outreach

Better Pathways is built around several principles:

Local
Support should come from people who understand the communities they serve.

Practical
Sometimes a small amount of assistance at the right time can prevent a situation from becoming much worse.

Respectful
Every individual deserves to be treated with dignity regardless of income, age, housing situation or personal circumstances.

Independent
Help should not always require navigating a complicated institutional system.

Private
People should be able to ask for assistance without unnecessary exposure or stigma.

Direct
Community funding should support the people actually delivering outreach.

Who We Hope to Help

Better Pathways may assist people from all walks of life, including:

  • Seniors experiencing isolation
  • Individuals experiencing housing instability
  • People facing temporary financial or personal crises
  • Families who need help connecting with resources
  • Individuals living with developmental or daily-living challenges
  • People leaving difficult situations
  • Individuals who feel uncomfortable accessing traditional services
  • Anyone who could benefit from respectful community-based support

Our work is not limited to one age group or one type of challenge.

Sometimes the most important question is simply:

“What would help you right now?”

Working Alongside Existing Services

Better Pathways is not intended to replace hospitals, emergency services, regulated health-care providers, shelters, police, crisis teams or established social-service organizations.

When someone requires medical care, emergency intervention, specialized mental-health treatment, legal assistance or another regulated service, Better Pathways professionals can encourage or assist the person in connecting with the appropriate resource.

Better Pathways is intended to fill the space between doing nothing and entering a formal system.

That space can matter.

Support Better Pathways

Community-funded outreach allows people to help people directly.

Every contribution helps make it possible for qualified and trained outreach workers to spend time in the community providing practical support, listening, connecting people with resources and responding when someone needs a helping hand.

Support local outreach.
Support the people doing the work.
Help create a Better Pathway forward.
